Launching Auspatios Direct: Building More Than Just an Ecommerce Store

When a new e-commerce site goes live, most people only see the finished shopfront.

They see the product pages, the checkout, maybe a few helpful guides. What they don’t see is the strategy, planning, problem-solving, and countless moving parts that go into making a complex online store actually work.

Yesterday we officially launched the new website for Auspatios Direct, and it’s a project Gabrielle and I are particularly proud of.

Not just because the end result looks great, but because it’s a perfect example of what happens when a client and agency work together to build something properly from the ground up.

A Different Kind of Patio Business

Auspatios Direct isn’t a typical patio company.

Instead of selling installed patios through a local contractor model, they specialise in DIY patio kits engineered for Australian conditions, delivered to most of NSW and Southeast QLD.

That creates a very different set of requirements for a website.

Customers need to:

  • Understand the different patio types
  • Compare roof styles and mounting options
  • Select sizes and configurations
  • Learn how installation works
  • Request custom quotes when needed
  • Confidently place orders online for high-ticket items

In other words, the website isn’t just marketing: it’s the primary sales platform for the business.

That meant the build had to be far more than a standard brochure site.

Engineering the Online Buying Experience

From the beginning, this project was about designing a system that would make a complex product category easy for customers to understand and purchase.

Working closely with the Auspatios Direct team, we helped develop a structure that allows customers to navigate through key decisions like:

  • Freestanding vs flyover patio kits
  • Insulated vs single-skin roofing
  • Standard sizes vs custom designs

DIY Patio Kits need a custom-configurator… so we built one!

Behind the scenes, this involved careful planning around:

  • Product structure and collections
  • SEO-optimised content architecture
  • Custom quote workflows
  • Installation guide integration
  • Delivery information and FAQs
  • Conversion-focused navigation and layout
  • Heavily trained AI chatbot to help with custom confidence and answer complex questions

The goal was simple: make the buying process feel clear, logical and trustworthy.

Much More Than a Website Build

One thing we often tell clients is that a successful project rarely begins with design.

It begins with understanding the business model.

In this case, we worked alongside the Auspatios Direct team to help shape:

In short, we didn’t just build the site.

We helped design the entire digital sales environment around it.

That kind of strategic collaboration is something we believe makes a real difference to results.

A Collaborative Project

Projects like this only succeed when everyone involved is committed to building something properly.

The Auspatios Direct team were deeply involved throughout the process, bringing industry knowledge, practical insights, and a willingness to refine ideas along the way.

Dave Paton shared this message with us after the site launched:

I’ll say it again and keep saying it — thanks so much for all your hard work and extra efforts. It’s been an awesome learning experience for me. Working with an expert like yourself who knows the ins and outs and is honest and true to their work — priceless.
The shop is a work of art.

I’m looking forward to our future projects together.

– Dave Paton, Auspatios Direct

Feedback like that means a lot to our team, because it reflects the kind of relationship we aim to build with clients.

The Reality of Custom E-Commerce

There’s a common misconception that building an online store is quick and inexpensive.

Simple stores can be.

But when a business depends on its website as the core engine of sales, the level of planning and development involved is much closer to building a specialised piece of software than setting up a template.

Projects like Auspatios Direct often involve months of:

  • Technical architecture
  • UX design
  • Product structuring
  • Custom workflows
  • Integration and testing

Large digital agencies regularly quote projects like this in the $70,000 to $125,000 range.

As a boutique agency, our goal is to deliver the same level of strategic thinking and technical capability, but in a more direct, collaborative and efficient way.

That’s one of the advantages of working with a small, experienced team.

What Happens Next

Launching a site is never the end of the project.

It’s the beginning.

Over the coming months we’ll be working with the Auspatios Direct team on:

  • Ongoing SEO development
  • Content expansion
  • Conversion optimisation
  • Analytics and customer insights
  • Product range growth

Because a well-built e-commerce platform should continue improving long after launch.
